High Kick It for Local Dance

I met Brenda Neville, Director of the Neville Dance Theatre, early on when Green in BKLYN first opened. She introduced herself, told me about her dance company & invited me to her concerts. We got on each other’s mailing lists. We see each other coming & going to our jobs. And she’s become an awesome neighbor.

In addition to how she brightens my day, Brenda has a wonderful local dance company that contributes free tickets and beautiful work to the neighborhood.

Recently, Brenda’s company – the Neville Dance Theatre – launched a Kickstarter campaign to fund more free tickets. This time for children at the Ronald McDonald House The campaign is in its last three days & could use your help…

In Brenda’s own words… Neville Dance Theatre is self-producing a special October New York City performance season of our original dance narrative ‘Memento Muerto’ – a haunting and powerful production about the vibrant and diverse Mexican Day of the Dead traditions, at the legendary Merce Cunningham Studio Theatre, this October 27-29, 2011, as one of the final productions performing there before its closure this November.

Last presented in 2007 on a much smaller scale, our upcoming production is set to bring the vibrancy of these traditions to life like never before in an expanded production. As of now, we have a mind-blowingly awesome artistic team assembled, discounted rehearsal studios booked and a fabulous venue contracted, outrageously talented dancers working tirelessly learning choreography, vibrant slides and set designs selected, and promotional seeking press releases sent out. Whew! Now, all we need is the money to pay for it all!

We are 100% committed to making the project and production happen, but presenting a full concert dance season, especially in New York, ain’t cheap! We need support for our costs including theater and studio rentals, set & costume construction, slide projections, documentation, and making sure the dancers and collaborators get some kind of payment for all their hard work:) We also need a few special individuals as Ticket Sponsors’ whose pledges will provide tickets for twelve under-served children/families from the non-profit organization The Ronald McDonald House in New York City to have the unique opportunity to attend our closing night performance Free-of-Charge.

Donations for Hurricane Victims

Tropical Storms Irene and Lee caused widespread damage throughout upstate communities, especially in the Upper Catskills. With damaged roads and bridges, lack of access to supermarkets, inadequate transportation and high gas prices, many residents are going to face critical food and supply shortages in the upcoming months.

With the help of City Harvest, Regional Food Bank and Move for Hunger, GrowNYC is answering this call for help by collecting needed items at Greenmarkets throughout the City. Donations will be distributed to communities most in need by the Regional Food Bank of Northeastern New York.

Over 10% of the farmers who provide fresh and local produce at Greenmarkets in the City have lost all of their crops for the year due to severe flooding during and after Tropical Storms Irene and Lee.

Visit GrowNYC’s on-line donation page to make a monetary contribution that will go directly to Greenmarket farmers impacted by the storms. We urge all New Yorkers to come together and help feed the communities that have helped feed all of us for so long.

Labor for Your Neighbor – Labor Day!

In the wake of Hurricane Irene, however you look at it, we “dodged a bullet”, “were lucky” and/or “were blessed” here in Brooklyn. However, in upstate New York, the damage is devastating.

Governor Cuomo is coordinating a volunteer effort to help with clean up and to provide donations and supplies to those areas hardest hit.

The Governor will kick off a volunteer effort, “Labor for your Neighbor” on Labor Day weekend to assist in local clean up efforts in the Schoharie Valley, Catskill and North Country Regions. This will entail a few hours on Sunday or Monday in the affected regions working to help those in flood-stricken areas to clear their homes of the mud and debris Irene left behind.
To volunteer for this effort, go to the Labor for Your Neighbor website. You will receive further specific instructions regarding times, locations and how to prepare. Note that these communities remain isolated and in distress, with difficult conditions on the ground. The National Guard and State Office of Emergency Management will provide supervision and safe transport to the sites. To ensure an orderly effort, the numbers of volunteers will be controlled.
You can also help though donations. To donate funds, go to the site again. The United Way of New York will pass on your donation to a registered charity in an area hit hard by the storm. Every dime you donate will go directly to assisting storm victims.

Little Essentials Block Party – 7/24

One of Green in BKLYN’s customers heads up a wonderful organization (Little Essentials) here in the neighborhood…

Little Essentials is a Fort Greene community-based organization that provides free baby & toddler clothing, furniture & other essential items to Brooklyn families living in poverty.

Little Essentials is hosting a block party/fundraiser this Sunday, July 24th from 11AM-7PM at Grand Avenue (btw. Lafayette & Clifton Place in Clinton Hill).

The event promises fun for all ages including chair massage, face painting, a donation drop off & a raffle with great prizes (including one from Green in BKLYN).

Little Essentials helps keep children safe (in cribs, car seats & clothing), lifts spirits & provides hope to parents. It also takes care of our environment by reusing items that are only slightly used. Reduce, reuse, recycle & help your neighbors.

Trilok Fusion Center Spring Swing

There’s a new kid in town…

The newly opened Trilok Fusion Center for Arts and Education houses a number of arts and education organizations as well as a venue for community events right here in our Clinton Hill neighborhood (actually, just across the street from Green in BKLYN!).

This Sunday, May 22, the Center hosts the Spring Swing Event to raise funds to help build their library. The event will include live music, food, drinks, activities for kids and a raffle (including a donation from Green in BKLYN).

SONYA Studio Stroll – This Weekend

This weekend is the 12th Annual SONYA Studio Stroll – an awesome (FREE) opportunity to visit with local Brooklyn artists.

The Stroll is a self-guided tour of SONYArtist members’ studios and galleries in Clinton Hill, Ft. Greene, Wallabout and Bedford Stuyvesant and takes place Saturday, May 14th & Sunday, May 15th from 12-6PM both days, rain or shine.

With hundreds of great works of art on display, you can start or add to your own art collection and you can preview the artwork in the SONYArtist Registry, follow the links on each artist’s page for more information about them or contact them directly.

Tsunami Relief Raffle at Green in BKLYN

Recent events in Japan have left the island country reeling. Photos & stories from the area are devastating. And although events around the world are challenging to many, Japan’s needs are immediate & life effecting.

Green in BKLYN is now collecting cash donations for the Red Cross Japan rescue efforts. We’ve got a big old jar on the counter in the shop for your pocket change. Toss it in!

In addition, we’re hosting a raffle with proceeds from ticket sales also going to the Red Cross. Buy a $1 raffle ticket & be entered in the drawing for basket of green gifts,including a Spare SodaStream CO2 Cartridge!

For folks who have a SodaStream Seltzer Maker, these cartridges are vital for continued access to freshly made seltzer. Buy a ticket for yourself or someone you know who loves bubbles. Heck, buy a bunch!

We’ll be hosting the drawing through the month of April. Buy a raffle ticket, make more bubbles & help lighten the weight of Japan’s heavy load!

Santa’s Totally Coming to Town!

Santa Claus will be back this Saturday December 11th from 2-6pm at Gray’s Studio Cafe (345 Myrtle Avenue btw. Carlton & Adelphi).

And, Gray’s Studio Cafe will be sharing free hot chocolate & cider while Santa’s in the house.
