They’ve been at this for years & last January they collected 100 tons of e-waste.  This year’s goal?  110 tons! Help them reach this goal by disposing of your electronics at one of their many dates & locations!

The Lower East Side Ecology Center accepts electronics from households, not-for-profit organizations & small businesses (less than 50 employees, please call ahead).  A list of acceptable materials can be found here.  Remember: they do not accept home appliances such as microwaves, refrigerators or air conditioners.  All events will be held rain, snow (!) or shine.

“Close the Loop” was developed by the Fort Greene-Clinton Hill Community Food Council & is one of several projects to emerge from Get Fresh! Food Access, Food Justice & Collective Action in Fort Greene & Clinton Hill, the 2011 Fort Greene & Clinton Hill Community Food Assessment.

Stop by the shop during December to share the joy & grace of the holiday season with any donations you have… And, thank you, from your neighbors.

The Avenue is kicking it off on September 5th with a “Back to School Celebration”!  Stop by for a day of fun & games before heading back to hit the books or for a last summer hurrah! The first Sunday is jam-packed with free activities, music & merchant specials with more every week.  Some activities for the whole family include:

• Facepainting, street games, hula hoops & chalking
• Cooking demos & tastings
• Yoga & dance classes on the street
• Live mural making
• Dance party with Soul Summit

In addition, there’s a new contest this year on the Avenue.  A lucky winner will be selected each week to receive $100 in Myrtle Avenue gift certificates! Neville Dance Theatre’s fun and frolicking duet, Heads or Tails, has been selected for presentation as part of Yong Soon Kim’s Cool New York 2010 DANCE Festival held at the John Ryan Theatre in DUMBO Brooklyn.

Today is Halloween! Boo & stuff!

At Green in BKLYN we celebrated in our own special way: handing out magic wish pennies to the trick-or-treaters of Brooklyn.  Though a few continued to insist on candy, everyone loved the idea, calling it “old school” & “good for the recession”.  As Elissa said, “The magic is alive in Clinton Hill!”

We caught the eyes of folks – me, dressed as Lady GaGa & Elissa, dressed very scarily as her very own mother (:/ yikes!).

There were literally hundreds of children on the streets of Clinton Hill hunting for goodies from every shopkeeper & dressed as little doctors, supermen, ghouls, bumblebees & so many many others who were very, very cute.

The neighborhood was alive and glowing with the excitement of the night & we were so very tired (especially me, in high heels!) at the end of the day.  It was a wonderful experience, watching little faces fill with delight & yell “Yessss, magic!” and “Cool!” after receiving their penny.

Oh, the innocence.  To them & the child in all of us… Happy Halloween!
